Treating Acid Reflux without Nexium

Many patients suffering from acid reflux are prescribed Nexium® for relief of pain, burning and discomfort in the upper abdomen and esophagus, but there seems to be an equal number of people choosing to fight their acid reflux without Nexium by experimenting with alternative treatments.

“While Nexium did relieve some of the acid reflux, it still persists to the point that I am looking into surgery to correct the problem.”

“After approx. 2 weeks of Nexium I developed side effects such as belching and diarrhoea. However, it did completely take care of the acid reflux.”

In truth, all pharmaceuticals come with a degree of unintended effects. Even though the side effects are uncommon and the benefits clearly outweigh the concerns, treating acid reflux without Nexium has potential for some people’s symptoms.

In some instances, treating acid reflux without nexium is warranted. For instance lactating mothers or pregnant women should avoid all medications, including Nexium to protect their child’s development. Age concerns with young children or the elderly also point towards examination of other treatments.

So the question becomes: how can one manage acid reflux without Nexium? Your first step, as any doctor will recommend, begins with lifestyle change. Losing weight and removing your “trigger” foods (there is no set list of foods to eat, everyone reacts differently to different foods) from your diet can definitely assist. Unfortunately, lifestyle change is rarely easy and many people would prefer a quick fix. More importantly, many people suffer acid reflux due to entirely non-diet related issues.

Another possible treatment for acid reflux without Nexium involves positional treatment – a simple elevation of 15-20cm of the head of your bed has shown to be an effective treatment. Invasive surgery can also treat acid reflux without Nexium, however this is usually regarded as a last resort.

Nexium is an effective and well proven treatment of acid reflux. However, if you so chose, treating acid reflux without Nexium is definitely possible – so ask your doctor about the alternatives.
